Two days on the European Citizens' Initiative

The European Citizen's Initiative (ECI) is waiting in the wings and the countdown is on for more civic participation in Europe. The Greens/EFA-Group and its expert on direct democracy, Gerald Häfner (Germany), took this as an opportunity to dedicate 2 days of talks to this important topic.

From June 29th to June 30th 2011 different panel discussions were held to exchange opinions. Furthermore the statutes and the board of Democracy International were confirmed. The public interest was high and there was no sign of political apathy.

1) Panel discussions

On June 29th 2011 several panel discussions took place at the European Parliament in Brussels. Panels were held by Gerald Häfner, Eva Lichtenberger (Austria, Greens/EFA) and Ulrike Lunacek (Austria, Greens/EFA) who invited distinguished experts and practitioners in the fields of direct democracy and the ECI, such as: Markus Beckedahl, Carsten Berg, Prof. Dr. Christian Joerges, Klaus Kastenhofer, Bruno Kaufmann, Sylvia-Yvonne Kaufmann, Jens Nymand-Christensen, Jassa Pipan, Mag. Robert Stein, and Lukas Wachter.

During the event, we focused on the measures needed to ensure the ECI can start to work. Specific projects were presented and possible solutions to ECI-related problems were discussed. It appeared to us that language barriers might be the main problem to be dealt with. The questions of funding and networking were also part of the debate.

After the discussion a dinner took place in the Abbey of Kortenberg, offering participants the possibility to exchange their views and experiences and to connect for future projects.

2) Democracy International

The dinner also served as kick-off event for the Democracy International Conference. Democracy International is a global coalition for direct democracy. Its basic goal is the establishment of direct democracy (initiative and referendum) as a complement to representative democracy throughout the world.

During the conference on June 30th around 70 people from all over the world decided the statutes and voted the first permanent executive board. The NGO also presented its current projects.

Both events can be considered important contributions to the promotion of direct democracy in Europe.

News Flash Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Venezuela's Hugo Chavez have vowed stronger ties and ceolsr focus on issues! The two leaders are trading partners Iran and Venezuela that will virtually assure US Naval Blockades to enforce U.N. sanctions to complete our diplomatic mission. Hugging Hugo and recognizing Mahmoud is a sorry end to a globe trotting trip. Little or no emphasis on U.S. interests is the result I see; go ahead and add in Former President Clinton's mission in N.Korea. How far you stoop is amazing, will you take a knee. Are we actually that pressed as a nation, we don't stand up for our interests or principals? That foreign policy does represent our backbone or lack of backbone is more like it! Ahmadinejad has asked for public debates with U.S. Pres. Obama; declare you will not take a knee and that you will never bow to this hero of the radical Islamists in the world. The entire world is watching if we keep giving up ground our opponents will continue gathering ground. I don't know; you must have Generals and Diplomats telling you these things everyday, why am I telling you, because they all work for you, and you SIR work for me!
