The Green European Foundation (GEF) and the Polish Zielony Instytut organise a workshop on the European Citizens' Initiative at the Greens/EFA European Summer University, on Saturday, September 10th 2011.

GEF realised a manual on the ECI that details on a 10 step approach to a successful initiative, available for download on the foundation's website here.
The workshop will follow the 10 step approach of the manual and will provide expertise on various aspects:

- the concept of the European Citizens’ Initiative and main difficulties in implementing an ECI
- various European models of citizens’ participation and their potential impact on the success of the ECI
- hands-on experiences with the main challenges posed by the ECI: collecting 1 million signatures across Europe; reaching various cultural backgrounds; policy formulation etc.

To this end, experts from various fields have been invited to participate. Among them are Bruno Kaufmann, President of the Initiative and Referendum Institute Europe, as well as author of the GEF's manual on the ECI, and Przemyslaw Sadura, journalist and assistant professor at the Warsaw Institute of Sociology.

You can register for the workshop here.

If you never or seldom paid in to the Social Security syetsm you will not be qualified for benefits, just like any other retirement plan. Most Baby Boomers are fine, they get their money and benefits. Only people that are spouses or dependents of a member, can legally get any benefits as well. Social Security was never meant to be an insurance program for ALL Americans, you have to contribute.Homeless? I suspect a few might. But the great majority of Baby Boomers are fine. And don't worry about the government, they cant take anything away from you.Yes, it is the younger generations that needs to be thinking of their future. The government is gonna be getting out of annuity/insurance business. They would much rather see folks run their own retirement programs. Besides that, it is better for the economy that investments be made in the private sector. Most the Baby Boomers did just that, they have Social Security but they also have investments and annuities. It is gonna be rough on people that have to live just off Social Security and even worse for those that have nothing set aside for old age. They will become a burden to society.

good question. I don't think soteciy will allow a disabled person to do without. The rules need to change. I raised 3 kids on my own, all healthy, that means no help from the taxpayer. When a child is disabled the family get benefits from birth, no matter what their income is. I think this ditty needs to be looked at. How many people have kids that produce income from birth? Then if the good ole social security would hire some full time investigators to look at these dead beats with the bad backs, better known as SSI, I bet they would save their cost in triplicate. Once caught as a scammer then that dead beat would have to pay back what they scammed from the system. Then what about the lazy bums that fight SS for years, while living on welfare? Do you know that when they finally win, they get thousands in back benefits and never pay a dime back to the state welfare system? We need change alright, but not on the backs of Seniors and the truly disabled.

I agree with Danny, it is the younger ones who has to save their miones for their future welfare..don't depend on the government anymore to help. But for people who never worked they will not get anything but welfare, medicaid, food stamp, and many my have to live in the rescue missions or on the streets..as of now our rescue mission is already over flow with homeless people So it depend on the next President to fix the problem..=)
