Why Greens support the ECI

Gerald Häfner, MEP, is spokesperson of the Greens/EFA on the ECI and on EU democracy. He was a negotiator of the European Parliament for the ECI regulation and a driving force for making the instrument more citizen-friendly.

Ulrike Lunacek, MEP:

"The European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) gives the EU citizens, for the first time, the opportunity to put their issues directly on the agenda of the European institutions. The ECI will bring the European Union closer to the citizens and create a European consciousness. With the ECI, the EU citizens are not just helpless spectators of a difficult and sometimes not very visible decision making process in the EU, but an active player. Our common Europe depends a lot on the credibility and success of future ECIs. That is why you are welcome to join, make you own contribution, let us create the future of Europe together."

Eva Lichtenberger, MEP

Modern democracy is unthinkable without direct participation. This is of course also true for the supra-national level, for the EU. In the European Convention we laid the foundation for the European Citizen's Initiative (ECI)  - against the will of the Governments of the Member States. Since then the ECI is a matter of my heart and not only a political issue. The first ECI being a success will be decisive for citizens participating in the European legislative process.

Several NGOs will also present their ideas and projects for an initiative, among them are projects for a nuclear-free Europe, for more effective exchange programmes in the EU, for media pluralism, and for fair roaming.

Two days on the European Citizens' Initiative

The European Citizen's Initiative (ECI) is waiting in the wings and the countdown is on for more civic participation in Europe. The Greens/EFA-Group and its expert on direct democracy, Gerald Häfner (Germany), took this as an opportunity to dedicate 2 days of talks to this important topic.
